The Sherwood Forrest neighborhood is filled with classic brick homes built mostly in the 1960's and '70's with large yards, mature trees, walkable schools and soccer fields. It is home to a popular neighborhood pool. Neighborhood schools include Sherwood Elementary, Speas Elementary and Mount Tabor High School.

The Sherwood Forest theme started when city planners changed the name of the road from Mt. Tabor Road to Robinhood Road in 1928. However, this road was one of the main routes for moonshine runners from North Wilkesboro to Winston-Salem. Many car chases between the Sheriff/revenuers and bootleggers happened on Robinhood Road between Old Hwy 421 and the city limits from the 1920s through the 1950s. The outlaw image might have had an influence on the new name for the area.

The main roads within Sherwood Forest were all built by the Moravians and are some of the oldest in the county and state. Peace Haven Road was built in 1765, with Robin Hood & Country Club Roads were built in the 1770's. The Mount Tabor area around the Robin Hood and Polo Road intersection was originally a hamlet settled by a group of German Methodists in the 1840's; just a quiet farming community up until development with stores and restaurants in the 1940s and 1950s.

Sherwood Forest is located in the West Ward and has been a popular community with the completion of Silas Creek Parkway, and then the New Sherwood Forest neighborhood, located on the west side of Peace Haven Road.

The established neighborhood covers a little over 1 1/2 square miles and is home to 2,500 residents, with many calling Sherwood Forest home for many years. You will find some homes built in the late 1930s, but for the most part, the greatest number were built between 1950 to 1970.
